Flaming Good time At 100th

04 March 2008

The high winds on Saturday may have ruffled a few Parade costumes but did not blow away the high spirits and the Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade centennial celebrations.

The float parade was a great success with lots of entries and high quality floats from local businesses, organisations as well as a number of fire engines, from vintage engines to the latest New Zealand Type 11 Fire Appliance.

“The parade was excellent, really spectacular. It ran really smoothly. A lot of people were amazed at the number of entries and the quality of the floats.

“All those watching it enjoyed just as much as those who were in the parade- that’s what it’s all about. Thanks to everyone who participated”, says local fire Chief Ben Godddard.

There were various prizes up for grabs for the best float, most humorous and most original as well as best dressed bikes or trolleys.

There was a good turnout at Saturday’s celebration dinner with many former Brigade members travelling form all over the country to join in the celebrations.

“It was such a fantastic evening of reminiscing. Everyone had a great time,” adds Ben.

There were a number of guest speakers including Dame Margaret Bazely from the Fire Service Commission. Trevor Brown regional commander NZ Fire Service, Colin Laurie from United Fire Brigades’ Association, Ruapehu mayor Sue Morris, local resident Margaret Horne, Kevin Smith Wanganui chief fire officer and local fire chief Ben Goddard. Jim Shelley, ex brigade chief officer, also spoke and had the honour of cutting the centenary cake, which was made by Trish Goddard.

Ex-Brigade member Karen Grimwade, who spent a considerable amount of time researching and writing the centennial book that was launched on Saturday night, was made a Brigade honorary life member for her dedication and loyalty.

The dinner celebrations were interrupted by three fire call-outs which the duty crew had to rush away to, adding a bit of drama to the meal, says long time Brigade member Bruce Thompson.

All in all, the weekend celebrations were hugely successful.

“It was an awesome, unforgettable event,” says Ben.

“I really want to thank all the Brigade members for their support. I’m very proud of them.”
